Heart in a Basket Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern – Basket Stitch

ByErin Toews

This free crochet wall hanging is the perfect gift for your Valentine (or just to have hanging around your house like me). You can make it in pinks and reds, or go more neutral like I did so it remains relevant throughout the year.

My color story for my home decor is blue, gray, wicker, and plants. I think you’ve sensed that by looking at all of my product photos. Lol! I like to keep my colors simple so that when I go to buy or make a new piece for my home, I know what will fit in and what won’t. I know buying something navy or wicker will more than likely not clash with my decor. But adding something orange will definitely stand out, and not in a good way!

This crochet wall hanging pattern uses the basket stitch, which is a combination of front-post and back-post double crochet. Have you ever tried using these stitches? I think that the outcome is quite stunning! I will try to come up with a video tutorial soon. But it is pretty straightforward. I know you can figure it out!

I’ve never seen the basket stitch used for colorwork, but somehow I pulled it off to make this heart! Maybe I will try to make a similar pattern for other holidays as well? Hopefully I can make it work. Which holidays would you like to see?

Pattern Notes for the crochet wall hanging

  • When the row begins with ch 2, it does count as a stitch throughout.

  • Instead of beginning a row with ch 2, you may want to choose to use a false (or chainless) dc stitch as explained in this video.

  • When changing colors, drop the previous color so the working yarn hangs on the WS, and pick it back up for the next row.

  • You may want 2 skeins of Color A, and 1 skein of color B.

  • All color changes happen on the WS so it doesn’t need to look pretty.

  • Some prefer to use an H (5.0mm) hook.

  • The hanging cord is optional, at times I prefer to hang it without the cord.
